  • Wii60 - The Breakup

Well, it looks like the Wii60 Romance is all but over folks...

Reggie never really was all that interested, but it looks like Peter has put the nail in the coffin with his interview over at c|net:

It's looking like the Wii won't be direct competition for the Xbox or PlayStation 3. Do you agree?
Moore: In a lot of instances, it will be a No. 2 box because it's priced accordingly. The fear I would have is that people will buy the box and only play a few games. I think you'll pull it out at parties. It's fun for a few minutes, but I'm not sure (how long that will last).

    Let the console wars commence...

  • Read 360-Deals using XB Stream!

Well, it looks as if XB Stream 1.2 is available and it works like a champ!  Some podcasters got swamped with downloads over the weekend with the initial 1.0 version (please uninstall if you currently have it ).  Subsequent versions (1.1, 1.2) have ironed out the kinks.  360-Deals is included as a default rss (text) feed, so check out the latest deals from the comfort of your couch!

Here is the description of what how it works:

XB Stream in a nut shell is an RSS/XML feed reader/aggregator that works with the XBox 360 video game console. XB Stream allows you to view xml based content feeds (xml, rss, rdf) on your Xbox 360 video game console; you can also listen to podcasts and blogcasts as well. XB Stream automatically downloads and converts text based content feeds into images that can be viewed from the media>pictures>computer blade and hear audio podcasts/blogcasts from the media>music>computer blade. Content feeds are automatically managed by the software so you are always given fresh feeds, and older feeds are automatically deleted. Audio feeds show up as playlists and can be listened to while playing your favorite games!

Check out the full system requirements here, but in a nutshell all you need is XP and Windows Media Player 11.

Ohh... and if you are reading this from your Xbox 360 using XB Stream, just right click on to the next post... ;)

    Great work PG4!

  • Xbox LIVE Arcade Wish List: NHL 94

Xbox LIVE Arcade Wish List:  NHL 94

Inspired by xbox360fanboy's regular posts on the topic, we thought we'd give it a swing...

Back in the days when a simple video game introduced us to the game of hockey (icing, blue lines, etc...).  When a simple juke left, then right left your competition in tears...  Forget passing and teamwork!  Break away's baby, break aways!!!  Every hit had the same 'argh' sound effect (you know the one!), but you felt your little digital warriors pain!  Those were the glory days of video game hockey.

While NHL 07 and NHL2K7 have recently been released, they still don't hold a candle to this gem.

Imagine NHL 94 recreated with full Xbox LIVE play...

Well... probably not as good as that, but you catch my drift...

  • Nintendo Announces U.S. Launch Date and Price

    Press Release:

Nintendo will reshape the home entertainment and video game landscape with the launch of its heralded Wii™ home video game console. Wii will go on sale in the Americas on November 19th and Japan on December 2nd - European launch date, price and software line up will be announced at a press conference in London tomorrow (Friday 15th).

Wii will be sold as an affordable, mass-consumer product at an MSRP in the US of just $249.99. The price includes one wireless Wii Remote controller, one Nunchuk™ controller and the groundbreaking collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc, which anyone can play using simple physical movements, experienced or not.

Every Wii console will include another distinctive feature: a series of on-screen “channels” that make up the Wii Channel Menu, which makes the console approachable and customizable for everyone, from the most avid gamer to people who have never played before. The Wii Channel Menu is the starting point for all of the console’s functions. The “channels” offer a gateway to a rich variety of entertainment options. When connected to a TV, the Wii Channel Menu offers a simple interface letting users pick games to play, get news or weather, upload and send photos or even create playable caricatures of themselves to use in actual games. The variety of options available through the Wii Channel Menu motivates both gamers and non-gamers to turn on Wii’s power every day.

Wii is creating worldwide excitement with its unique control system, an inventive, first-of-its-kind controller whose position can be detected in a 3-D space. The new controller allows users pinpoint target in games or move through the Wii Channel Menu with precision and ease. This intuitive control system will be understood immediately by everyone, regardless of their previous experience with video games. With this one small controller, Wii makes games both easier and more intense than anything previously experienced. For example, in the Wii Sports tennis game players swing the Wii Remote like a racket to hit the ball, as in real life. They can add topspin or slice the ball just by angling their hands and wrist like they would in a real match.

“Wii reinvents games for the devoted player,” says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “But more importantly, Wii breaks the wall separating players from non-players by delivering the best game experiences for the most affordable price. We believe the next leap is games for the masses – young and old, gamer or non, alone, with a friend or with the whole family.”

Fils-Aime made his remarks in New York, shortly after Nintendo executives in Japan announced Wii will launch there on Dec 2nd priced at 25,000 yen. Both announcements come ahead of a European press conference during which Nintendo will unveil specific detail around the console’s launch in Europe.

Between launch day and Dec. 31, Wii owners across America will enjoy a robust lineup of 30 software titles, with selections for everyone from video game veterans to newcomers. Some top Nintendo launch titles include Wii Sports, a compilation of tennis, baseball, golf and bowling; The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess; and EXCITE TRUCK™. While publishers are free to set their own prices for games, first-party Nintendo titles will have an MSRP of $49.99. Wii’s self-loading media bay also can play the entire library of more than 530 Nintendo GameCube™ titles from day one.

Third-party developers around the world have lined up to provide unprecedented support for Wii, “I believe the Wii will attract new and casual gamers to the world of interactive entertainment,” says Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO, Electronic Arts. “It’s a fun, easy and economical system that will become a bridge to gaming for mainstream audiences. At EA, we are putting more support behind the Wii than any Nintendo hardware launch since the Super NES.”

Additional information about the list of Virtual Console games and the pricing structure will be revealed in the coming weeks.

  • IBM has begun shipping Wii CPUs

Just caught wind of this news over at Gamespot:

On September 14, Nintendo will hold simultaneous, superselect press events in Tokyo and New York City to reveal details about its forthcoming Wii console. As part of the hype buildup to the event, Nintendo today revealed that it has already received the first central processing units for its next-gen console.

"The first chips are in our possession," said Genyo Takeda, the senior managing director and general manager of Nintendo's integrated research and development division. "Today's milestone marks the final stage of our drive to reach both core and nontraditional gamers with an inviting, inclusive and remarkable gaming experience."

Though it was not mentioned in the IBM/Nintendo press release, some wire-service reports claim that the first batch of Broadway chips landed in the Mario Factory's hands in July--meaning production of the console could be further along than expected.

The Wii CPU, code-named "Broadway," was developed by American computer giant IBM, which also made the central chip for the Xbox 360. It was made using the 90-nanometer production process at the company's East Fishkill, New York production facility. IBM also codeveloped the PlayStation 3's Cell CPU with Sony and Toshiba.

Not so coincidentally, IBM also made the CPU for Nintendo's current-generation console, the GameCube, which was code-named "Gekko." That chip, made at IBM's Burlington, Vermont, factory, is apparently much less powerful that its successor. "Silicon on Insulator technology from IBM helps deliver to Nintendo a generous improvement in processing power while achieving a 20 percent reduction in energy consumption," said IBM when comparing the Broadway and Gekko processors.

  • Europe PS3 Launch Delayed until 2007

Caught the following news over at GamesIndustry.biz:

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that the release date for PlayStation 3 in PAL territories has been pushed back until March 2007.

In an official statement, Sony said the decision to revise the launch date was taken following "the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PlayStation 3."

Consumers in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia will now have to wait until March to get their hands on a PS3. However, the console is still on track to launch in Japan on November 11 and in North America on November 17. Sony still plans to ship 6 million PS3 units globally before the end of the 2007 fiscal year.

Blue laser diodes are a key component of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive. Rumours of a shortage began to emerge just days ago, with reports suggesting that Sony had suspended shipment of the diodes to customers making standalone Blu-Ray players - but it would seem that wasn't enough to ensure there would be enough consoles to go round in November.

Sony's plans for a global launch in November were first announced by Ken Kutaragi back in March. The announcement came as a surprise to many industry observers who had predicted a staggered release schedule and a 2007 launch date for Europe - but at E3, SCEA president Kaz Hirai confirmed November release dates for all three territories.

News of the delay will no doubt please executives at Microsoft, which managed to pull off a global launch of the Xbox 360 last year. There were problems with hardware shortages but last month, Microsoft Europe boss Chris Lewis pledged that there will be no shortfall this Christmas - and with only the Nintendo Wii to compete against, MS could be set to clean up.
