The Nintendo Wii Virtual Console is once again packed with three releases this week from the NES, Genesis, and TurboGrafx16. Dynamite Headdy for the Sega Genesis leads the pack and reminds us how dominant the single player platform games genre was back in the day...
In Summary:
- Star Soldier (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points)
- Dynamite Headdy™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points)
- Drop Off (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points)
WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL
July 30, 2007
The Virtual Console™ is like a box of chocolates: You never know which games have the tasty caramel filling and which ones have that pink-green crème inside. Whatever your preference, we've got you covered with this weeks release of Star Soldier, Dynamite Headdy and Drop Off. Read on and savor the delicious centers of these classic treats.
Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
Star Soldier (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): The standard for vertically scrolling shooters, Star Soldier is the original game that spawned all of the titles in the long-running Soldier series. Go inside a floating space station inhabited by a giant computer known as Starbrain. Your mission: to stop Starbrain's galactic invasion by piloting Caesar, a new, compact space fighter through 16 deadly stages. Collect power capsules to increase three different attributes of your ship: firepower, movement speed and defensive shields. Blast wave after wave of approaching enemies or use the innovative Trap Zone feature to fly beneath a land mass and avoid incoming fire. Conquer each stage to make your way to the final confrontation with Starbrain.
Dynamite Headdy™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): Headdy, a toy with a detachable head, arrives in North Town to find that the evil puppet king Dark Demon is causing serious problems. Dark Demon is gathering up all the puppets in town and turning some into his own evil minions, while eliminating the rest of the puppets that aren't good enough to join his legions. Headdy is captured and is targeted for the incinerator, but escapes in the nick of time. Now he's got to save the town. To do so, Headdy has to take on all manner of bad guys and even has to contend with his lifelong nemesis, Trouble Bruin the bear. Can Headdy overcome all his foes and take down Dark Demon?
Drop Off (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Brave five rounds of haunting, nightmarish dreams in this take on the classic arcade puzzler. To save his dearly beloved from the malicious demon that controls her dreams and holds her captive, our brave hero plunges himself into the nightmare to vanquish this evil foe. Deftly use the arrow items and control the angle of the ball to shatter the blocks that descend from the top of the screen. Set your sights on the joints holding the blocks together and knock off multiple blocks in one exhilarating blow. As you drop more and more blocks, their shapes will change, allowing you to earn bonus points. You must use your concentration and reflexes to defeat the demon and save your beloved.

Top Reasons Why the Xbox 360 August Price Cut Makes Sense
With all the sales flyers and rumors floating around the interweb more or less confirming a Xbox 360 price cut, we wanted to step back and rationalize the reasons why it would make sense...
- Madden NFL 08
- With all three consoles finally available come 'Maddenoliday', this makes perfect sense. Madden Football gamers are an entirely separate gamer 'clique' (but equally important). The vast majority of Madden 'ballers' had a PS2 last generation. These gamers likely waited this year to see how the PS3 and Xbox 360 compared prior to committing to a 'Madden' platform. The word on the sports message boards is that NCAA Football apparently runs smoother on Xbox 360 (compared to the PS3 version). This is due to the game running at 60 fps. Madden 08 has also been reported to run at 60 fps on the Xbox 360 as well. Microsoft is certainly in a good position to take advantage of this annual 'Maddenoliday' surge in game sales with a well timed price cut.
- Follow What Leader?
- During E3 2003, Sony apparently became aware of a pending Xbox price cut and beat Microsoft to the punch by announcing a Playstation 2 price cut to $179 (from $199) during the week prior to E3. As planned, Microsoft followed through with their announcement at E3 Wednesday that year. This year, Sony also announced (prior to Microsoft's press conference) that they would indeed be cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 by $100 (even though this is apparently a temporary 60GB inventory reduction). Perhaps Microsoft is tiring of these console war games and didn't want to appear to be 'following the leader' as in the previous generation.
- $399 for how long?
- On June 30th, 2007, the Xbox 360 Premium will have been $399 for 645 days. This is even longer than the time it took the PlayStation 2 to initially reduce its launch price. Certainly the Playstation 3 launch price influenced this quite a bit, but damn.... that is a long time at $399!

Full Press Release:
Xbox 360 HD DVD Price Drop Announced
Published July 26, 2007
San Diego—Today at Comic-Con International 2007, Microsoft Corp. announced it will lower the price of the popular Xbox 360™ HD DVD Player from $199 to $179 (in the U.S. only) starting August 1, 2007, and will add five free HD DVD movies for anyone purchasing an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player between August 1 and September 30.
In addition, Microsoft further solidified the Xbox 360 as the ultimate high-definition entertainment platform, with key announcements around the HD DVD launches of 300 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Heroes: Season 1 from Universal Studios.
Exclusive Marketplace Content
To promote the HD DVD versions of 300 and Heroes: Season 1, Microsoft unveiled exclusive content for Xbox LIVE® Marketplace. Xbox LIVE will offer 300 on demand in HD starting August 14, and is working with Warner Bros. at Comic-Con on a Bringing It Home campaign featuring 300 and other Warner Bros. properties.
In advance of the street date for the Heroes: Season 1 HD DVD boxed set, Xbox LIVE members will be able to download the show’s pilot episode free in high definition for a limited time. Members will also be able to download trailers, teaser scenes, and other promotional materials highlighting the Heroes: Season 1 boxed set on HD DVD.
Already the most affordable high-definition player available, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best solution for movie lovers seeking HD content in the highest possible resolution. The player’s price reduction to $179 continues to set the bar for value, making the Xbox 360 platform the most affordable solution for consumers seeking the broadest, most compelling selection of next-generation gaming and HD video experiences.
"With the price reduction to $179, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player continues to be the most affordable way to enjoy high definition," said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "From the beginning, we set out to offer Xbox 360 owners an unrivaled high-definition experience, with a choice of optical discs on the HD DVD format and digital downloads through Xbox LIVE Marketplace—both of which have a selection of the best content Hollywood has to offer. Today's announcements around 300 and Heroes: Season 1 are great examples of how we believe HD content can be offered to consumers.”
Free HD DVD Movies In addition to the price drop, Microsoft is extending Toshiba's highly successful "Perfect Offer" of five free HD DVD discs to Xbox 360 consumers. Previously exclusive to Toshiba HD DVD Players, with the purchase of an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player at the new low price of $179, choose five HD DVD titles free from a selection of 15 popular titles through a mail-in offer. With a retail value of over $140 (U.S.), this promotion makes the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player one of the most compelling offerings for consumers looking to make the leap into HD this holiday season.

Has Microsoft Lost its Mojo?
In the pursuit to topple the Playstation 3, Microsoft's Xbox 360 seemed to be on the right course. A full one year head start combined with some killer games lifted the Xbox 360 quickly into the #1 next generation console slot. Gears of War proved to be the 2006 holiday hit that hardcore gamers craved, but since then a string of bad news have stung the software giant from Redmond.
The Big Three include:
- Xbox 360 Hardware Failures
- A chorus of gamer polls and angry message board posts came to a head when one week prior to E3, Microsoft admitted that the Xbox 360 hardware was failing at unacceptable levels and announced a 3 year warranty extension for the dreaded 3 red lights hardware message. This news alone could be the tipping point that causes Microsoft to lose it's lead against Sony this generation. It appears that Microsoft's experience in software and services (not hardware) is clearly showing, compared to both Sony and Nintendo.
- E3 2007
- Good games releasing this year were shown but the Resident Evil 5 re-announcement, Scene-it trivia game, and special edition Halo 3 Console announcements fell flat. No price cut to match Sony's (albeit a limited $100 60GB version inventory move) was announced.
- Peter Moore bolts to head up the EA Sports division
- The figure head that Xbox 360 fan boys and Xbox division employees loved to rally around has left the building. Yes, the man with that lead the Sega Dreamcast to a valiant fight against Sony has decided to move on and remove a few tattoos. Interestingly enough, Peter worked directly with Visual Concepts (as Sega owned them at the time), and now will directly compete against their efforts at EA Sports.
Casual Gamer Missteps:
Microsoft was the first to digitally distribute casual games via a game console with Xbox LIVE Arcade. The initial batch of Xbox 360's even bundled a simple remote with game play buttons (think Wii Remote without motion) that seemed to signal serious thought and investment was being put towards the casual games market. Unfortunately, the casual gamer doesn't typically have a networked home (at this point), and they don't typically spring for a $399 game console during the early adopter phase of a console's lifecycle. What about the $299 Core model you say? Well, remember you can't get online or save any of these casual games without a memory card or hard drive. Other problems with Xbox LIVE Arcade included the initial menu system, which was a step above using DOS to find things. Even with the redesign it is still a rather clunky interface. Casual gamers are apparently gravitating toward a simpler approach with the $250 Nintendo Wii. As everyone knows, the Wii has innovative casual games (namely Wii Sports) that do not require an internet connection. It has an innovative yet simple remote, and is in the impulse buy price range of $250 (if you can find one).
Certainly Sony has taken it's lumps this generation, but with an assault by Sony for the hard core gamers and Nintendo for casual and younger gamers, will Microsoft be able to regain its 'mojo' and compete for the number one slot this generation?

Never did finish Shining Force, but it perhaps it might be worth a go...
In summary:
-
Kirby's Dream Course™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points)
-
Devil's Crush (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Animated Blood, Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points)

Shining Force™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points)

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL
July 23, 2007
Ah, the three classic summer leisure activities: golf, pinball and battling hordes of evil creatures. Luckily, it's Monday and once again Nintendo has you covered. Players can hit the crazy links with the spherical Kirby, become a pinball wizard or just enjoy an afternoon of helping good triumph over evil. So pour yourself a tall glass of lemonade and settle in for some classic gaming fun.
Kirby's Dream Course™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Step up to the tee for the wackiest golf game of your life. This one- or two-player game features a floating golf course in the sky. High above Dream Land, players can pitch and putt the ever-popular puff ball, Kirby, through a maze of three-dimensional obstacles on a zany checkerboard course. Players must aim for the multitude of enemies that are spread throughout each fairway. Kirby must hit all the enemies to make them disappear, and the last one becomes the hole. Sink Kirby into the hole to advance to the next stage and clear all 8 courses – 64 holes in all.
Devil's Crush (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Animated Blood, Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): Devil's Crush is the exciting sequel to the hit pinball game Alien Crush and features even smoother ball movement and enhanced special effects. Shoot the ball onto the board with the Devil Shooter, then use flippers and nudging to keep it in play and rack up a high score. Complete certain conditions to play up to six different bonus stages. Get a "Perfect Clear" on those to earn a huge amount of points. The game's ominous theme is enhanced by its enemies: wandering skeleton knights, sorcerers and even a giant face that changes from a goddess to a sinister serpent.
Shining Force™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): In ages long forgotten, Light fought Darkness for control of the world. Finally, the Ancients defeated the evil ruler of the dark forces known as Dark Dragon and cast him into another dimension, though he vowed to return in 1,000 years. As time passed, all memory of Dark Dragon was buried, and the land of Rune enjoyed 10 centuries of peace. Yet, as promised, the dark ruler returned, along with hordes of evil creatures that ravaged the land. As chaos erupted, several strongholds of Good still held out, awaiting a hero who could wield the Powers of Light.
The list of downloadable games is updated weekly on Nintendo's Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com. For more information about Wii, please visit wii.com.

In summary:
- Paper Mario® (Nintendo® 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Balloon Fight® (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points)
- Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points)
Full Press Release:
WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL
July 16, 2007
Ready for a fantastical summer getaway? Instead of a travel agent, visit the Wii Shop Channel, where this week's new game offerings invite you to explore some exciting and highly unusual locales. Magical 3-D realms, balloon-filled skies and a perilous space station are just a few of the exotic destinations you'll find.
Paper Mario® (Nintendo® 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): Paper Mario is a graphically innovative game that breaks from the confines of the RPG genre. Now slimmed down, everyone's favorite plumber flips, spins, jumps and hammers his way through scads of exotic worlds that teem with a huge and hugely entertaining supporting cast. Players control numerous old and new characters in a complex, nonlinear story that follows different scenarios depending on player choices. A dizzying collection of spells, attacks, skills and special items can be collected by players willing to thoroughly explore the lush 3-D environments.
Balloon Fight® (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Control a character to pop your opponents' balloons before they pop yours. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Don't be fooled by this game's simple premise or cute exterior. Underneath you'll find a surprisingly addictive game with strategy to spare. After mastering the easy-to-learn controls, you still have to get a grip on the game's impressively realistic physics. And if that's not enough, there are the ever-increasing enemies and environmental hazards like lightning and water. Try the game's second mode, Balloon Trip, if you feel like taking a break from the action and just want to see how long you can stay aloft. And hey, who doesn't like popping balloons sometimes?
Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone—Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): Make your way through a dungeon-like space station and defeat the prowling monsters in this real-time first-person shooter. You're a member of the elite Debuggers, a group of warriors who are jacks-of-all-trades. Assigned to inspect an unmanned space station, you have exactly 100 minutes to get in, destroy the monsters lurking in each block, make your way to the lowest level and deactivate the automatic detonator placed there. With each monster that slips by you, the core block becomes harder to survive in, so speed is key in preserving the facility and each separate block. Experience the thrill of survival as the timer ticks away and you uncover the truth of the events that occurred.

As confirmed by Sony this morning (July 9, 2007), the PS3 60GB will see a reduction in price to $499 (from $599).

Stay tuned today as we will be monitoring and posting the best deals combined with this price drop!

With the recent rumors of a pending PS3 price cut, is Microsoft thinking of taking the plunge also?
According to Joystiq, on June 15th, 2007, the Xbox 360 Premium will have been $399 for 600 days. This is even longer than the time it took the PlayStation 2 to initially reduce its launch price.
Even with the emergence of the Nintendo Wii, Sony is still the primary rival and target for Microsoft's Xbox division. History shows that Microsoft and Sony always try to out-trump the other come E3, the industry's largest convention.
During E3 2003, Sony apparently became aware of a pending Xbox price cut and beat Microsoft to the punch by announcing a Playstation 2 price cut to $179 (from $199) during the week prior to E3. As planned, Microsoft followed through with their announcement at E3 Wednesday that year.
So, do you think Microsoft will return the favor this year by trumping Sony's expected price cut at E3 this Wednesday?

This week we see another 3 releases for the Wii Virtual Console. Never was a big fan of Ecco the Dolphin, but apparently it warranted this sequel ('The Tides of Time') on the Genesis... Nintendo Wii Virtual Console does what your boxed up and broken Genesis don't....
In summary:
- Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points)
- Ecco: The Tides of Time (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points)

Full Press Release:
WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL
July 2, 2007
This week the Wii Shop Channel is all about a healthy diet. Grab lots of vegetables, drink plenty of water and top it off with some eggs. As an appetizer, might we recommend starting with Super Mario Bros. 2™, a delicious morsel starring everyone's favorite plumber. But in this game, players can control three other characters as well. As an entrée, try the dolphin. Not to eat, of course, but to play. Ecco™: The Tides of Time is a swimmingly fun underwater adventure. Finally, let a multi-headed dragon help you cleanse your palate in DRAGON SPIRIT™. This week is a veritable feast of delicious games.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Join Mario™, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad in an incredible fantasy world on a quest to save the day. This time, they have little more than vegetables to defend themselves with. Pick up items and throw them at your adversaries to clear levels in seven massive worlds. Even enemies can be picked up and tossed across the screen. Each character has a unique set of abilities: Luigi can jump higher and farther than any of the other characters, Toad can dig extremely fast and pull items out of the ground quicker than anyone and the princess is the only one who can jump and hover temporarily. This unique installment in the Mario series will keep you coming back for more.
Ecco: The Tides of Time (Sega Genesis, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): In this sequel to Ecco the Dolphin, everyone's favorite underwater hero must battle the Vortex Queen and her hive of drones. The wicked queen followed Ecco back to Earth from the future and quickly established her hive. It's up to Ecco to defeat this alien threat by navigating the depths of his side-scrolling world, solving puzzles and receiving help from his marine-mammal friends. When Ecco used the time machine to save his pod, he split the stream of time in two. He must now restore the rift before the world is permanently changed into a mechanical world, sucked dry by the Vortex.
DRAGON SPIRIT (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): A fantastic world of adventure unfolds in this vertical-scrolling shooter. Sealed away by the gods long ago, the Evil Demon of Darkness, Zawell, seeks to rise again and unleash a new reign of evil. The brave warrior Amur races to rescue Princess Alicia from the demon's wretched clutches. Amur takes the form of the legendary Blue Dragon and fights his way through the legions of monsters that await in the sky. Battle your way through eight different areas, using your Dragon Breath to bring down airborne targets and Fireballs to wipe out targets on the ground. Destroy flashing enemies and smash Eggs to uncover different kinds of power-up items. Boost your firepower by increasing the number of heads your dragon has, and defeat all the bosses as you make your way to Zawell's dark lair.
