The Departed (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD]

This week there is only one HD DVD release, but it is better than all of the releases in the past month put together. The Departed is one of the best movies I have seen in the past year, and it has been nominated for 5 Academy Awards. This movie truly has all the makings of a classic, and I actually started to change my opinion of Leonardo DiCaprio for the better after seeing it. Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Martin Sheen all put in incredible performances. I would have to say that I think Mark Wahlberg is the best, and gets some of the best lines. I definitely think that this movie has all of the potential to be a classic.

Even if you don't have HD DVD, go out and pick this movie up on DVD (or Blu-Ray). You will not regret it!

Hollywoodland (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)

Good morning, Class.  We will start this week with a quick history lesson.  <History Lesson> You know the big Hollywood sign, the one you've known ever since you were born?  Well, when your grandpa was a kid, it used to say "Hollywoodland", and it was an advertisement for a housing subdivision in LA, circa 1923.  What's that?  You don't believe me?  Here's confirmation from a bunch of anonymous internet "experts": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Sign.  Class dismissed. </History Lesson>

This week there are two new HD-DVD's, and one of them is. . .you guessed it - Hollywoodland.  A true story of murder and intrigue in Old Hollywood that is highly rated, I'm actually looking forward to watching this one.  Ben Affleck was even nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of murdered actor George Reeves (yes, the original Superman).

The other new movie this week Failure to Launch.  This is one of those chick-flick movies that ain't so bad if your girlfriend/wife makes you watch it the first time, but trust me, you will definitely not want to go back to this well more than once.  Still, you and I both know it never hurts to have some nice HD-DVD selections for the "ladiez" in your collection.  On a side note, Terry Bradshaw puts in a decent acting performance, but c'mon, is it really necessary for him to have a "naked room"?

Below are the HD-DVD releases for the week, along with their IMDB rating and the number of votes recieved on IMDB so you can judge what "the people" think about the movie.  Each movie below is linked to Amazon if you would like to add the movie to your personal collection at a good price.

    Beerfest (Unrated) [HD DVD]

Let me start this week's HD-DVD release feature with a simple observation: The Academy has not chosen to recognize any of these films with a nomination or award of any sort.  'Nuff said.

Our recommendation this week is to grab Half Baked (some of Chapelle's early work) or check out Beerfest, which, according to one dude who reviewed it on IMD is supposed to be pretty hilarious, especially if you watch it with your buddies.  I personally watched The Wicker Man over the weekend, and a rating of 3.3/10 is pretty generous.  I can only recommend this movie if you need it to fill out your Nicholas Cage collection.

Brokeback Mountain (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD)

'I wish I knew how to quit you...'

If you like cowboys, or like to watch Heath and Jake ride . . . horses, you will be happy to know that on Tuesday you can pony up for Brokeback Mountain as it gallops onto HD-DVD.  Ok, ok.  I'll stop.  Based on reviews, the visual quality of this HD-DVD release is superior with beautiful scenery and great sound.  The only other HD-DVD release this week is a re-release of Ridley Scott's 1989 film,  Black Rain starring Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia as two NYC cops tangled up with the Japanese mafia.

Our recommendation this week. . . is to either snag Brokeback "for the wife" (so that she will be cool next week when "Beerfest" hits HD-DVD), or reach back into the bottom of the list from week and add Scooby Doo to your growing collection.
